About Barney Brown

Barney is Head of Digital Communications and Deputy Director at the University of Cambridge, where he has led digital communications since 2008. His remit is the online presence of one of the world's best-known universities. That estate runs to thousands of websites, managed by many independent parts of the institution.

Much of his work is about bringing coherence to that complexity. He led the creation of a modern digital strategy for the University, and he speaks candidly about getting things done inside a medieval institution. More recently his team audited cookie usage across the University's top websites.

Before Cambridge, Barney was Webmaster at the Forestry Commission, where he managed the England sections of its website. Earlier he was Web Development Officer at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Outside work he is the founder of the Intercontinental Music Lab, a collaborative music project that has released seven albums since 2008.
