About Vasilis Avlonitis
Vasilis is Director, Web Platform & Technology at MongoDB, a role he took up in September 2026. He is a senior engineering leader with 22 years of experience across software engineering, architecture, technical programme management and platform delivery, much of it in regulated enterprise environments.
His specialism is digital experience and content platforms at scale. He has built and governed DXP and CMS platforms and programmes spanning more than 250 websites, leading the design of Optimizely and AEM-based "digital factories", technology selection from first principles and content operations strategy. He has a deep background in component governance, reusable journeys, performance, headless and composable architectures, and personalised experiences.
Vasilis has led large, distributed teams from technical discovery through to cross-functional delivery, in sectors including consumer goods, life sciences, banking and insurance. Before MongoDB, he was Senior Manager and Engineering Lead at Walgreens Boots Alliance, leading a team of AI-native engineers building governance tooling for a complex microservices estate. Earlier, he spent more than four years as Senior Delivery Manager at EPAM Systems and over six years at Accenture.
About MongoDB
MongoDB is the company behind the MongoDB database, a document-oriented database built for storing and working with unstructured data. Founded in New York in 2007 as 10gen by three DoubleClick veterans, it took the name of its flagship product in 2013. In 2016 it launched Atlas, a cloud database service that now accounts for most of its revenue.
Listed on NASDAQ since 2017, MongoDB employs more than 5,600 people and serves over 65,000 customers worldwide. Its headquarters are in New York, with offices around the world, including Dublin. In 2025 it acquired Voyage AI to bring embedding and reranking models into its platform for AI-powered search.
